Week 4 provided plenty of exciting outcomes and even some fireworks.
Cherokee Bluff was the week's biggest surprise, taking Madison County to overtime. If it wasn't for a missed extra point in the OT period, the Bears could have walked away winners. Nevertheless, Bluff proved they have the personnel to make the Region 8-4A race very interesting. In other action, Jefferson smoked Oconee County to break the three-game losing streak to the Warriors, North Hall picked up its first Region 8-4A win on the road against Walnut Grove, Lumpkin County's offense kept rolling with a 35-0 shutout of Temple. East Hall also started Region 8-4A play 1-0 with the win over Chestatee, and Habersham Central bounced back with a comeback win over Central Gwinnett.
Week 5 has several area teams starting region play, and three of those showdowns are on the Jacobs Media airwaves and streaming live on AccessWDUN.com.
Jackson County at North Forsyth – Trying to predict what will happen in this Region 8-6A opener is next to impossible. On paper, the two programs are very similar, and both are better at running the football than passing it. They average close to the same on points scored and given up, but there has to be a winner and a loser in this one. Jackson County running back MJ Spurlin could be the X factor in this game. The 6-foot-2, 240-pound back is averaging 154 yards rushing per game. If the North Forsyth defense allows Spurlin to have himself a night rushing, it could get ugly. However, the Raiders have proven they have a solid rushing attack. If they can sync up the passing game, the Raiders could be dancing into the locker room victorious. You can listen to the game on WDUN AM 550 (Click to listen live).
East Hall at North Hall – It's a chance for these two old rivals to start the Region 8-4A schedule 2-0, and just looking at these two on paper and on the field, North Hall is in better shape offensively. The Trojans took care of business on the road at Walnut Grove last week, answering whether they could win after taking the long road trip to Walton County. East Hall had to grind it out against a Chestatee team still finding its way last week. The Trojans put 69 points on the Vikings last season en route to their 13th straight win. If the Vikings can't get the offense going, the Trojans could score more than 69 points this season. You can hear the game on FM 102.9 WDUN (Click to listen live).
Apalachee at Gainesville – Gainesville has had its ups and downs but has the athletic ability to get them out of a jam. There's not much to say about this game. Big Red has dominated the series and is averaging 30.5 points per game. The Wildcats are giving up 37.5 ppg. This one should be over early as the Red Elephants should roll to their fifth straight win and start Region 8-6A play 1-0. The game can be heard live on FM 94.5 The Lake (Click to listen live).
