FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Flowery Branch athletic director Jimmy Lawler confirmed that Joey Ray has been relieved of his position as head baseball coach.
Principal Dr. Jason Carter released a statement on Thursday.
"After much thought and consideration, we have decided to make a leadership change for our baseball program," Carter said. "We feel this is best for the players and the school. We want to thank Coach Ray for his service, and we wish him all the best."
Ray will remain at the school as a teacher.
Ray guided the Falcons to 116 wins and five playoff berths, including a semifinal appearance in 2018. The Falcons were on their way to perhaps their best season during Ray's tenure when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the season. The Falcons were 12-1 that year. The Falcons posted four 20-win seasons. The best was a 24-9 campaign in 2021.
Before Ray arrived at Flowery Branch, he spent four seasons at Milton, where he guided the Eagles to back-to-back state championship games, beating Roswell in 2013 for the Class 6A crown.
