By AccessWDUN Staff

Police officials say the woman accused of robbing a bank in Gainesville on Thursday turned herself into police the night after the crime.

A social media post from the Gainesville Police Deparment Friday afternoon said Michelle Lee Johnston, age 44 of Gainesville, is facing charges in the robbery at the Truist Bank location on Shallowford Road.

Johnston is being held in the Hall County Jail on $5,700 bond. She faces charges of robbery by intimidation and theft by taking.

The charges against Johnston indicate the amount she stole was over $1,500.

A search is underway for a woman who robbed the Truist Bank on Shallowford Road in Gainesville Thursday morning.

Gainesville Police Lt. Kevin Holbrook told AccessWDUN the agency started to receive calls about the robbery at about 10 a.m.

Holbrook said a woman entered the bank and passed the teller a note demanding money. The woman then left the bank on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

"That's something that we currently are looking at to determine exactly what she left with," Holbrook said. "We are currently working with bank officials to determine that amount."

Investigators with the Gainesville Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were still on the scene as of about 11 a.m.

Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area of the bank is asked to call 911 to report that information.

"We hope to have information shortly to be able to push out to the public for their assistance in identifying this female," Holbrook said.

No injuries were reported in the robbery.

"Bank robberies are something that are not necessarily the norm anymore, but it's something that we do take very seriously," Holbrook said. "We always consider it a very dangerous situation."

This story will be updated as the Gainesville Police Department releases more information.
