Gwinnett County Commission holds steady on general fund millage rate

By Christian Ashliman Anchor/Reporter

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners Tuesday adopted the same general fund millage rate as last year after hosting three public hearings on the issue.

The revenue raised from 2023 property taxes is set to fund “essential county services,” according to Deborah Tuff with the county. The steady-held millage rate is slated to sit at 6.95 mils. Commissioners previously took comments at required public hearings, as well as online comment forms.

“My colleagues and I took every public comment into careful consideration before deciding to hold the county’s millage rate steady,” Gwinnett County Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson said. “Holding the rate the same as last year allows us to continue delivering the high-quality services residents expect and deserve while avoiding placing an undue burden on Gwinnett homeowners facing a tight economy."

Property taxes in the county are based on millage rates set by the county government, schools and cities, with one mil equalling one tax dollar per thousand dollars of assessed property value.

The tax assessor’s office in Gwinnett County has calculated the total value of taxable property in the county, also known as the tax digest, by conducting annual updates on residential and commercial property values.

“The Board’s decision will fund services and projects approved in the 2023 budget,” Financial Services Director Buffy Alexzulian said. “Most homeowners in Gwinnett benefit from the Value Offset Exemption, which means they will not see an increase in the county government portion of their tax bill. Furthermore, for this year the Governor and the Georgia General Assembly approved the Homestead Tax Relief Grant which means homesteaded property owners will see an estimated credit of $143 for the county government portion of their tax bill.”

The 2023 total property millage rate for property owners in unincorporated Gwinnett County will be set at 14.71. Millage rates for special service districts and county-wide levies for recreation and economic development will also remain unchanged from last year.

Details on the 2023 millage rates and additional information about how property taxes are calculated in the county can be found online.

The commission’s action Tuesday has paved the way for the tax commission to mail property tax bills in August. Those tax bills will come due in October, according to county officials. Property owners and mortgage lenders can make payments by mail, online or at the main tax office.
