Former Banks County firefighter Captain Richie Alford will be laid to rest Thursday afternoon after his passing in Florida where he attempted to rescue two distressed swimmers.
The funeral service for Alford is scheduled for Thursday at 1 p.m. at The Torch Worship Center in Cornelia. A funeral procession will follow the service, which will run from The Torch to Ga. 365 to Highway 441 and then to Historic Homer Highway, down Highway 51 South and conclude at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, according to Banks County Fire and EMS officials.
The interment will take place at the church cemetery in Lula.
Fireman Richie Alford has been hailed a hero, having paid the ultimate price when he attempted to rescue two swimmers at Panama City Beach in Florida on June 15. The two swimmers were reportedly caught in a rip current and Alford swam out to help. He was unable to return to shore, according to Banks County officials.
