Hall County Fire Rescue applauded for assisting with compactor cleanup

Hall County Government is praising Hall County Fire Rescue for their commitment to the community after crews helped clear illegally-dumped garbage at the compactor site on Dec. 26.

According to Hall County Government, mounds of garbage in illegally-dumped bags greeted sanitation workers once the compactor re-opened for operation after the holiday weekend.  It took crews six hours to clear away all the waste.

“I have to commend my staff for their work ethic and diligence in doing whatever is necessary to keep Hall County clean,” Hall County Sanitation Supervisor Nate Smith said. “The sanitation staff got a helping hand when Hall County Fire Rescue Station 9 saw the Candler compactor site on Poplar Springs Road on their return from another call and stopped to assist with clean up.”

Smith has installed cameras around the area to prevent more illegal dumpings in the future.

“The behavior is not only illegal, it’s dangerous and it’s disrespectful to the community, to the environment, and to our employees,” Smith reminded citizens in a press release. “We hope by providing better signage and communication we can encourage people to use the sites when they’re open and visit the landfill when they’re not.”

The following items are NOT accepted at any of the 12 compactor sites in the county.

Yard debris (trees, leaves, grass, stumps, etc.) of any kind
Hazardous or liquid waste
Chemicals
Large construction debris (asphalt, concrete, etc.)
Boats
Mobile homes
Bulk Styrofoam (household Styrofoam, such as takeout containers and coffee cups are still allowed)
Shingles
Propane tanks
