Forsyth County 911 center showcases “Tree of Life” art installation

A new mural at the Forsyth County 911 call center showcases the lives that have been saved in a tree-themed art piece, which recognizes the operators who have helped give people a second chance.

The art piece was unveiled on Jan. 5 to celebrate life and the success stories from incoming emergency calls throughout Forsyth County. Along with praising the heroic actions of 911 operators, the art piece shines a light on first responders as well. The mural was painted by local artist Andy Bert, also known as “The Wall Nut.”

EMA and 911 Director Chris Grimes said the art provides a space to focus on the positive aspects of their work, rather than the calls that have an unfortunate ending.

“In this line of work, it’s easy to focus on the stories that don’t turn out the way we want them to,” Grimes said. “This initiative gives our 911 operators the chance to embrace the daily impact they have on people’s lives and remind them of all they do for the community.”

According to a press release, two telecommunications officers were recognized during the ceremony for their recent efforts in helping to save lives through their instructions on emergency calls.

Public Safety Telecommunicator (PST) Senior Rhonda Moore gave instructions to a husband whose wife began to suffer a cardiac event. Moore’s instructions resulted in the woman surviving after being transported to the hospital. Moore was reportedly given a Life Saving Award for her work.

PST Supervisor Shannon Parham was also recognized at the art unveiling event and given a Stork Award for helping a husband deliver their baby after his wife went into labor unexpectedly.

Forsyth County Commissioner Alfred John said he is grateful to have such an upstanding and willing group of people behind the phones in cases of emergency.

“When my own family has had to call 911, each time it was the 911 operators who walked our family through providing life-saving measures,” John said. “I am thankful for each and every one of our telecommunications officers, and I know this tree will be full of lives saved because of their actions.”
