The Barrow County Sheriff's Office on Thursday arrested a Winder man who is accused of possessing child pornography.

According to a press release from the Barrow County Sheriff's Office, Martin Smith, 54, was charged with five counts of possession of child pornography and was being held in the Barrow County Jail as of Thursday afternoon.

The investigation into Smith reportedly began when multiple reports were made to the Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about the possible upload and possession of child sex abuse material.

The Barrow County Sheriff's Office's Internet Crimes Against Children Unit then executed a search warrant at 606 Bowling Lane, which led to Smith's arrest.

"This investigation is part of the ongoing effort by the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigations Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, to identify those involved in the trade of child sexual abuse material," the release reads. "The ICAC Program, created by the U.S. Department of Justice, was developed in response to the increasing number of children and teenagers using the Internet, the proliferation of child sexual abuse material, and the heightened online activity by predators searching for unsupervised contact with underage victims."

The investigation was still active as of Thursday and additional charges may be pending.
