Football: Buford-Marietta; EForsyth-Walnut Grove; Bluff-NHall headline Week 6 radio lineup

By Bo Wilson Sports Editor

Week 5 saw several area teams explode offensively.

What a week it was for the area teams offensively. Almost every winning team scored four or more touchdowns.

Gainesville opened Region 8-6A play with a 55-6 blowout win at Apalachee, and Cherokee Bluff beat Chestatee, 42-21. North Hall got its first win under new head coach Sean Pender, 69-0, over East Hall. Banks County rolled past George Walton Academy, 33-0, Buford crushed Carver-Atlanta, 44-16, and Rabun County blew out Heard County, 42-13.

Will Week 6 provide the same offensive blowouts? It very well could.

Three intriguing matchups will headline the Jacobs Media airwaves, along with the Conditioned Air Systems Tailgate Show and the Hardy Chevrolet Scoreboard Show on Friday.

Buford at Marietta -- Marietta's non-region schedule has them begging for Region 3-7A play to start. The Blue Devils have faced three top-7 teams in Class 7A and the No. 4 team in Class 6A to start the season. Now, they'll play host to Class 7A's top-ranked Buford Wolves. We're just tired writing the first two sentences. The Blue Devils' stats prove it, giving up close to 28 points per game while averaging just 19 ppg. It won't be any easier for them this week as the Wolves are the fifth best in Class 7A in points allowed and are scoring a 10th-best 39.7 ppg. It's going to be Marietta's defense versus the Buford offense. If the Blue Devils produce like they have the first five weeks, it could be a long night.  You can listen to the game on WDUN AM 550 (Click to listen live)

Walnut Grove at East Forsyth -- The second-year Broncos have impressed folks around the area. They are 3-0 and upset Cedar Shoals two weeks in to get their first Region 8-4A win. They have a chance to start region play 2-0, but it won't be easy. Walnut Grove boasts a two-headed monster in running back Emaad Howard and quarterback Ashton Adams. Both have combined for more than 1,000 yards rushing and 11 TDS. But the Broncos' defense is fifth in Class 4A, only giving up 5.6 ppg. If the Broncos can slow down the duo of Howard and Adams, they'll find themselves in good shape when the fourth quarter horn blows. You can hear the game on FM 102.9 WDUN (Click to listen live).

Cherokee Bluff at North Hall -- After opening the season 0-2, the Bears have reeled off two straight wins. The defense has improved in those two wins, and the offense has continued scoring points. On the other hand, North Hall has had issues getting the new spread attack to produce, except for last week against East Hall. The Trojans scored 69 points and put up almost 500 yards of offense. The big question will be with that translate into success against an improving young Bluff team with no issues scoring points. If the Trojans struggle offensively against Cherokee Bluff, it'll be a long night. The game can be heard live on FM 94.5 The Lake (Click to listen live).
