Jam On The Square to bring bluegrass music and fun to Jefferson

Jefferson community members will have the chance to shuffle their feet to traditional folk music at the city’s Jam On The Square event on Friday, Sept. 30..

The City of Jefferson and Main Street worked together to create the new event, which will be held on the same weekend as the Jackson County Jamboree.

Jam On The Square will kick off at 7:30 p.m. on College Street with a Contra Dance. This is a form of line dancing that originated in the Appalachian Mountains. Contra Dances mix styles from English-style, Scottish country and 17th century French-style dances.

Atlanta Open Band will provide the music, and Heitzo will be the caller. Interested dancers will have to pay a $5 registration fee, but anyone else can bring a chair and listen to the music for free.

The festivities will continue on Saturday, Oct. 1 with more bluegrass jams that will echo through the downtown area. People can dance and listen to the music from noon to 7 p.m. Specifically, the Heard Bluegrass Band will perform on College Street from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m..

Attendees will also have the chance to buy food from local vendors and observe local makers’ demonstrations on College Street.

If attendees want to take a break from the sun, they can head to the Crawford W. Long Museum at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., or 2:30 p.m. to hear storyteller Ms. Donna tell stories for all ages.

And don’t forget the jams! There will also be a Jam on the Square Jam & Jelly Competition for attendees to enter for a $5 entry fee. Entries should be turned in by Oct. 1 by noon, and judging will commence at 1 p.m.

A live radio show, The Jackson County Jamboree!, will get underway at 7 p.m. at the Jackson County Historic Courthouse to close out the event. The show will feature traditional bluegrass music by: Maggie Mason Hunter and Friends, The Original Courthouse All Star String Band and Nine Pound Jammers with “Doc” Henry Johnson MC.

You can purchase tickets for the Jamboree at the Historic Courthouse. General admission tickets cost $15, and seniors over 65 and veterans can purchase their tickets for $10.
