Football: 35-point underdog Broncos stun Cedar Shoals for 1st-ever region win

ATHENS, Ga. — East Forsyth needed just one try to get its first-ever region win as a program.

The Broncos rallied from a first-half deficit to beat Cedar Shoals 22-14 on Friday on the road in both teams’ Region 8-4A openers.

It may have been the biggest upset in the state on Friday as the Jaguars came in as 35-point favorites. But for the moment, the second-year Broncos are all alone in first place.

“That’s pretty cool,” Coach Brian Allison said on the long trip back to Jot Em Down Road. “We were big underdogs to most people but we felt like we could play with them. I’m just so excited for the kids and the coaches. They have worked so hard for this. It’s a special win for everyone.”

It didn’t come easy. East Forsyth (2-0, 1-0 Region 8-4A) trailed 7-3 at halftime and was down 14-9 in the third quarter.

Tripp Morris, who scored twice on the night, gave the Broncos a 15-14 lead late in the third quarter. The defense, which forced two turnovers, held on.

East Forsyth, following a turnover of its own, stopped the Jaguars (0-3, 0-1 Region 8-4A) on a goal line stand late in the game.

“The defense played lights out all night,” Allison said.

Will Moffit had a huge sack and forced a fumble, which led to a Broncos touchdown. Cole Ferguson had an interception for East Forsyth.

Morris scored his second touchdown with just under five minutes left in the gameto give them the 22-14 cushion before the defense made it stand up.

East Forsyth is off next week and will take on Johnson in two weeks. The Broncos will jump back into region play at home on Sept. 23 against Walnut Grove.
