Week 2 was filled with interesting contests and saw six area teams begin the season 2-0.
Buford, Flowery Branch, Gainesville, Lanier Christian, Lumpkin County and Rabun County all moved to 2-0 on the season with big wins on Friday.
Top-ranked Buford steamrolled Mallard Creek, NC; Gainesville started slow but ended fast against Mountain View in the home opener at City Park. Flowery Branch held St. Pius X scoreless in an impressive defensive performance. Lanier Christian continues racking up a lot of points in a 70-0 win over the North Georgia Falcons, and Lumpkin County is off to its first 2-0 start since 2014.
This week's action should be just as good, if not better. The Jacobs Media airwaves will be filled with action, including three games, our Conditioned Air Systems Tailgate Show and Hardy Chevrolet Scoreboard Show on Week 2 and throughout the 2022 campaign.
North Cobb at Buford (8 p.m.) -- When it comes to mammoth battles, head to Buford. For the third week in a row, the Wolves have found themselves in a top 5 contest. This week's opponent: Class 7A No. 3 North Cobb. Could this be an early preview of a playoff matchup or even the Class 7A title game? Buford is giving up just seven points per game while scoring a whopping 47 ppg. On the other hand, North Cobb has only played one game so far, beating then top-10 ranked Westlake, 21-17 last week. North Cobb leads the series, dating back to 1958, 3-1. Buford's lone win came last season, 35-27, in a barn burner. Whatever this game holds, it should be a good one. St. Pius X at Jefferson -- Jefferson hasn't had any issues scoring points, but they have had issues slowing the opponent down. In Week 1, Alpharetta bombed the Dragons' defense in a 47-46 win, and last week, Wren, SC, rolled into Memorial Stadium and put four touchdowns on the board. The Dragons pulled away in the second half to knock off Wren, 56-28. So, as you can see, offense is not a problem for the Dragons. This week, they'll face a pretty good defensive team in St. Pius X. The Golden Lions held Flowery Branch to just nine points in the 9-0 loss to the Falcons. Will St. Pius X be able to tame the Jefferson offense, and will the Dragons' defense keep the Golden Lions from going off offensively? You can hear that game on FM 102.9 WDUN (Click to listen live).
Chestatee at White County -- The War Eagles come into Week 3 off a bye week and are 0-1. Chestatee fell to Hebron Christian, 63-13, in the home opener in Week 1. Meanwhile, White County has been working the kinks out of its new system under new head coach Chad Bennett, beating North Hall, 35-14, and falling to Habersham Central, 42-28. The off week for the War Eagles gave them a chance to regroup and refocus. As for White County, the loss to Habersham Central stings as they traded the lead with Habersham in the third quarter and were outscored 14-0 in the final period to fall to their rivals. The game can be heard live on FM 94.5 The Lake (Click to listen live).
