Football: Battle of Oakwood; St. Pius X-Branch; Gainesville-Mountain View headline radio lineup

By Bo Wilson Sports Editor

Week 1 didn't disappoint, except for maybe one or two lightning delays around the area. Other than that, the opening week of high school football season went off without a hitch.

Here's to hoping Week 2 is just as smooth. Regardless, Week 1 saw No. 1 Buford smack Alabama's top-ranked team, Thompson, in the Freedom Bowl at Milton High School, 38-7. It was a game most expected to be an epic battle. Instead, Buford proved it was way ahead of the reloading schedule.

Gainesville also impressed, so much so that they're ranked for the first time since 2015 in the state-wide polls -- No. 7. The ranking is a result of a 34-23 win over No. 6 Marist on the road.

The Jacobs Media airwaves will be filled with action, including three games, our Conditioned Air Systems Tailgate Show and Hardy Chevrolet Scoreboard Show on Week 2 and throughout the 2022 campaign.

St. Pius X at Flowery Branch -- The Falcons rallied from a 14-0 deficit last season to beat St. Pius X on the road, 21-14. The win was the first-ever over a private school and evened the all-time series at one game a piece. Flowery Branch edged Decatur last week in a come-from-behind 39-38 win over the Bulldogs. The Golden Lions won their opener over Dacula, 10-7. St. Pius X comes in looking to avenge the 2021 loss to the Falcons, while the Falcons are hoping to sail into Week 3, 2-0. You can listen to the game on WDUN AM 550 (Click to listen live)

West Hall at Johnson -- This one features two teams on the build. But it's the third straight meeting where the arch-rivals will enter the game with losing records. The Spartans have won the last two and lead the all-time series, 19-8, including a 35-7 win over Johnson in 2021. The Johnson defense will have to be much better than it was last week against Banks County, and if the Spartans can hang on to the ball -- four turnovers last week -- they could have a good night. You can hear that game on FM 102.9 WDUN (Click to listen live).

Mountain View at Gainesville -- The Red Elephants are flying high after holding off Marist, 34-23 in Week 1. It did get a little dicey for Gainesville in the second half, however, allowing the Eagles to close the game to just four points, 27-24. This week, Big Red faces a Mountain View team that ran the ball well in the 24-21 win over Shiloh. The Red Elephants are still working out the kinks, mainly the penalties. But if the Red Elephants can beat a top-10 team with 84 yards in penalties, they shouldn't have a problem with Mountain View. The game can be heard live on FM 94.5 The Lake (Click to listen live).
