Rabid raccoon found in Gainesville

A rabid raccoon was recently captured in Gainesville.

Hall County Government issued the positive rabies alert Tuesday afternoon. The raccoon had contact with a person in the 4600 block of Pinyan Drive in Gainesville.

The raccoon was shipped to the Georgia Public Health Lab - Virology Section in Decatur. Hall County Animal Control was advised Tuesday that the animal had tested positive for rabies.

This is the fifth confirmed case of rabies in Hall County in 2022.

Positive alert signs will be posted in the area where the rabid raccoon was found. Anyone who sees an animal acting abnormally in the area can contact Hall County Animal Services at 770-531-6830. During non-working hours, citizens can call Hall County Dispatch at 770-536-8812.

Hall County encourages pet owners to vaccinate their pets for rabies. Vaccines are available at the Hall County Animal Shelter for $10, Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 678-450-1587.
