Flowery Branch City Council hears opposition to Sterling on the Lake townhomes

The Flowery Branch City Council heard opposition at their meeting Thursday evening regarding a proposal for the addition of 65 townhomes to Sterling on the Lake.

Looper Lake, LLC sought to adjust the conditions of the 12-acre property off Spout Springs Road and Capitola Farm Road. While technically a rezoning, the property would remain a Planned Unit Development under the proposal. The property is currently designated for for-sale commercial and retail, while Looper requested the removal of that classification from about 8-acres of the property for the development of the townhomes.

Five Sterling on the Lake residents spoke in opposition to the proposed townhomes during a public hearing on the matter.

Frank Debold said he would like to see any vote on the matter delayed by six months due to ongoing construction on Spout Springs Road.

"I think it's really too early right now to consider this motion," Debold said.

Chris Fetterman, a former Flowery Branch City Council member and resident of Sterling, said he did not believe the proposed townhomes fit in with the neighborhood.

"This particular project now is definitely not with Sterling standards, at all," Fetterman said.

Chris Whittaker spoke on behalf of Newland, stating that the project would take about three months of engineering, followed by six to seven months of build time if approved by the council.

Flowery Branch Planning staff have recommended approval of the rezoning. The first vote on the matter will be held at the council's meeting on May 19.
