Baseball: Jefferson powers past Flowery Branch; LCA falls

JEFFERSON — After three scoreless innings by both teams, No. 8 Jefferson exploded for nine straight runs to knock off Flowery Branch at home on Tuesday.

The Dragons scored three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and five in the sixth inning to blow open the game.

It was the Falcons' (9-8, 3-4 Region 8-4A) fourth straight loss and the Dragons' (14-6, 9-1 Region 8-4A) eighth win in a row. The win also leaves Jefferson one game out of the region lead. Flowery Branch sits in fourth. 

Jase Peoples led the Dragons' offensive effort with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a solo home run in the fifth inning.

Levin Jones was the RBI leader with three. Brett Kelley drove home two runs, and Aiden Dumas and Owen Primm recorded an RBI each.

Spencer Neese earned the win on the mound for the Dragons, giving up four runs on nine hits while striking out five in 6 2/3 innings of work.

The Falcons tried to mount a comeback top of the seventh inning. Jake Beaver singled and Kade Beaver doubled to drive in two runs. Beaver scored the fourth run on an error.

Smallwood was 3-for-3 to lead the Falcons with two RBIs.

LCA fell to 5-5 on the season after dropping a region game on Tuesday.

Peachtree jumped on the Lightning quickly, running out to a 5-1 lead. But LCA rallied back to take a 7-6 lead before Peachtree rec,aimed the lead for good with two runs in the sixth. 

Gavin Strabala and Caleb Moore pitched for LCA while Isaac Dinn led a 10-hit attack with three hits. Camden Hohman drove in two runs while Moore had two hits. Carter Raulerson, Hohman, Barry Waymack, Strabala, and Jordan Smith all had hits for the Lightning.

LCA next will play host to Cherokee Academy on Thursday.
