Hall County Schools extends temporary bus driver bonus

Hall County Schools has extended the deadline for a temporary bonus for bus drivers through September 1.

This resolution was passed at the Hall County School Board meeting on March 14.

Clay Hobbs, the director of transportation for the Hall County School District, said they sent an email to the Hall County School System to promote the temporary bus driver bonus.

The bonus was originally intended to stop at the end of July.

“Last week, and I'd say within 48 hours, we had probably four times as many applications as we would normally see,” Hobbs said.

Hobbs estimated that there are approximately 200 regular education route openings for drivers and 47 special education routes. He hopes to get at least 30 new drivers, because many drivers are doing the job of two.

“We have some cases where we'll have one route that we can split in half,” Hobbs said. “And so we'll have two other drivers each take a half and get them [students] to school. But it works out pretty well because we want to make that a semi-permanent change, until we can get someone hired in the field.”
