Forsyth County names McKee next county manager

By Austin Eller News Director

The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners on Friday named David McKee as the next county manager following the departure of current County Manager Kevin Tanner.

McKee was previously named one of two finalists for the position. The announcement came in a special called work session on Friday.

McKee, who has served as assistant county manager since April 2021, will begin his new role on Dec. 16.

“David brings a wealth of leadership qualities and understanding of the County’s needs to the position,” Chairman and District 2 Commissioner Alfred John said. “The board looks forward to working with him in his new role.”

McKee has overseen operations of the county's Engineering, Recycling & Solid Waste, Fleet Services, Water & Sewer, Public Transportation and Public Facilities departments during his time as assistant county manager. He has also served as the executive manager for all transportation-related activities and responsibilities and is the county's key contact with the Georgia Department of Transportation.

McKee previously served in various roles in Dawson County beginning in 2006, including in environmental compliance, engineering, GIS and planning. He also served as Dawson County's Public Works Director and SPLOST Administrator.

McKee has a bachelor's degree in geology from Georgia Southern University. He also has an Advanced Certificate of Public Works Management from the University of Georgia's Carl Vinson Institute of Government and American Public Works Association.

“I am very pleased that David will be assuming the role of county manager,” current County Manager Kevin Tanner said. “There are a lot of good things happening here in Forsyth County and I have full confidence that David’s expertise, leadership and well-rounded knowledge of County operations will continue to advance the Board’s vision for the County well into the future.”

Tanner is leaving the position after a November announcement stating that he would serve as commissioner of the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities. Tanner served as Forsyth County Manager since Jan. 2021.
