Quick response by Baldwin and Cornelia firefighters and Habersham County Emergency Services minimized damage to a Baldwin apartment Sunday afternoon.
The fire, at 118 Pine Forest Circle in Baldwin, was reported shortly after 12:30 and resulted in damage to the kitchen of one unit.
Firefighter Drake Meister was the first to arrive, and Baldwin Fire Lt. Ross Jackson explained what happened next.
“He arrived on scene,” Jackson said. “There was slight smoke showing from the unit. He checked the door. The door was unlocked. He made entry, noticed that the fire was isolated. Isolated the fire by closing the door back. Med unit arrived on scene. He grabbed an A-B-C extinguisher, went in and put the initial blaze out.”
Jackson said that prevented the fire from spreading further.
Once fire apparatus arrived, firefighters used a water can to finish putting out the fire.
“There was some structural damage inside of the kitchen, behind the stove area and some of the cabinets above the stove area,” Jackson said.
The resident is temporarily displaced until repairs to the apartment can be completed.
