Buford City Schools announces new Superintendent

By AccessWDUN staff

Acting on the recommendation of its outgoing Superintendent, a long-time employee of the Buford City School System was named as the system's new Superintendent on Monday night.

The Buford Board of Education, during its Monday meeting, approved the appointment of Melanie Reed, following Reed's recommendation by the retiring Dr. Robert Downs.

Dr. Downs announced last year that he planned on retiring on June 30, 2022. He had served as Buford's Superintendent since January 2019.

Reed has served in the Buford City School System for 28 years, with the system saying in a post-meeting email that she has served as an educator, administrator, Assistant Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent.

“I am honored to be named the Superintendent and am very appreciative to Dr. Downs for his leadership and guidance. I certainly have big shoes to fill," Reed said. "It is also very humbling to know the Board of Education has confidence in me to lead our school system with the continued commitment to excellence. I am thrilled to continue serving this school district I love so much.”

Monday board meeting also saw the recommendation and approval of Dr. Amy Chafin as the system's new Deputy Superintendent.

Chafin has served as Assistant Superintendent for Student Achievement since last March and has served as a Curriculum Director for the system since 2017.
