Football: Three big region games highlight Week 7 radio schedule

By Bo Wilson Sports Editor

The region standings will continue to take shape as all but one area team will continue league play this week.

It's still early, though.

Last week, Jefferson solidified its chances of another region championship with a 27-7 win over Flowery Branch.

Dawson County pulled off an upset over White County in Cleveland with a late field goal, 31-28. North Hall proved it is ready for a region title fight in a massive win over West Hall at The Hot Gates, 38-14, and Cherokee Bluff continued its roll through the schedule with a 40-6 win over Gilmer.

This week, in Region 8-2A, all but No. 1 Rabun County begins league play, and Region 6-A Private and Region 8-A Public start region games.

Three games highlight the Jacobs Media airways, and all three should provide fans with plenty of excitement.

West Hall at Cherokee Bluff... West Hall's last two games are two the Spartans would love to forget and erase from the schedule. The Spartans' offense has sputtered over the last three weeks falling to Chestatee, 42-0, and North Hall, 38-14. It doesn't get any easier for West Hall as they travel to Region 7-3A defending champion and favorite, Cherokee Bluff on Friday. The Bears are the top-scoring team in Class 3A and have been bowling through the schedule. Bluff started slow in the region opener against Gilmer in Ellijay, but a massive second half propelled them to a 40-6 win. The Spartans will have to find some fuel for the offense early on or it could be another long night. You can hear that game on WDUN AM 550. (Click to listen live)

White County at North Hall... This one is always a battle no matter the record. Last year, Luke Brown booted a 17-yard game-winning field goal in overtime to lift North Hall past White County, 34-31,  in Cleveland. The game pushed the Trojans into a tie at the top of the Region 7-3A standings. There's no doubt the same thing could happen again this year. White County is coming off an opening region loss to Dawson County, while North Hall zoomed past West Hall, 34-14. As always, records don't matter in this one. You can listen to the game on WDUN FM 102.9. (Click to listen live)

And Gainesville travels to Lambert... The Red Elephants jump back into Region 6-7A play this week riding a four-game win streak. Big Red led from the get-go against the Hawks last week in Powder Springs, and Naim Cheeks was big out of the backfield. They'll face an improved Lambert team this week in a crucial region game. If the Red Elephants get past the Longhorns, they'll remain atop the region standings going into the off week on Oct. 8.  The game can be heard live on FM 94.5 The Lake. (Click to listen live)
