The Week 5 radio schedule was insane.
Buford and Chaminade-Madonna from Hollywood, Fla. lived up to the hype. Several Power 5 athletes scattered the field, but it was the defense that shined on both sides as the Lions gave the Wolves their first loss of the season, 7-0.
Over at The Brickyard, Chestatee gave North Hall all they could handle, but it was Luke Browns's 43-yard field goal that lifted the Trojans to their fourth straight win in the series and 18th overall, 23-21.
And Gainesville turned its first-half offensive struggles into dominance in the second half, scoring 21 unanswered points to blow past Forsyth Central, 34-7.
This week, three games highlight the Jacobs Media airways, and all three should provide fans with plenty of excitement.
Flowery Branch at Jefferson... This one gets top-billing as it's yet another battle between top-10 teams, and it's the Region 8-4A opener. The top-ranked Dragons are averaging 37.5 points per game on offense and giving up just over 10 points per game on defense. The Falcons offense has been pretty good as well, averaging 35.8 ppg, while giving up 15.8. This one will be a clash of two different styles. The Dragons are mainly a rushing team behind sophomore Sammy Brown, while the Falcons like to air it out with quarterback David Renard. But make no mistake about it, the Falcons have a pretty good rushing attack with Myles Ivey. This one, however, could come down to a defensive battle. You can hear that game on WDUN AM 550. North Hall at West Hall... The Trojans snapped a two-game losing streak with a win over Chestatee on Friday. Meanwhile, the Spartans were off last week -- a much-needed off week after being routed by Chestatee, 42-7 in Week 4. It's the Region 7-3A opener for both and will be the first home game for the Spartans on their new turf field at the Spartan Field. If the Spartans have the same offensive and defensive issues as they did against Chestatee, it could be a long night against North Hall's nasty wing-T offense. But it also could be an epic battle to open region play for the two teams. You can listen to the game on WDUN FM 102.9. (Click to listen live)
And Gainesville travels to Hillgrove... The Red Elephants did have the big-win hangover in the first half against Forsyth Central but found the offense to blow past the Bulldogs in the Region 6-7A opener. They'll shift back to non-region this week against Hillgrove. The Red Elephants could have another big offensive night as the Hawks are giving up 27 points per game. Naim Cheeks rushed over 150 yards and two touchdowns last week. He could have a field day against the Hawks' defense. As for the Red Elephants' passing game led by Baxter Wright, big numbers are on the horizon. The game can be heard live on FM 94.5 The Lake. (Click to listen live)
