Construction continues on new Gainesville middle school, high school projects

The Gainesville City School Board got an update on three construction projects underway at their schools.

The first update shared the progress of Gainesville Middle School West Campus, a brand new middle school being built on McEver Road at Gould Road.

"We're probably at a Phase 2, 50% completion," said Facilities Director Adrian Niles. "We hope to wrap the project up by June of next year."

In the last two weeks, Niles told the board they had finished grading the football field and were still working on the Georgia Department of Transportation main entrance. Framing and interiors are also underway.

He said the new campus was on schedule and under budget. It is 184,000 square feet and will include a full football field with a 40,000 square foot field house.

The other two projects are at Gainesville High School. The cafeteria and media center building is set to be completed by January 2022.

"We're about 75% complete with that," said Niles. "And we're about 25% into our Student Activities Center."

That center is a three story complex for multiple student activities, as well as a "re-do" of the current practice football, lacrosse, and soccer field, and expanding the track field.

The GMP for Phase 2 of the new Students Activities Center was approved by the school board at the meeting Tuesday as well. "[It] is a field pavilion, artificial turf pavilion, again for football, lacrosse, soccer, JROTC, band, field, all of those activities... we got approval [Tuesday night] so we'll get started in the next month or so with some site work."

Both the Student Activities Center and the middle school are set to open in the fall of 2022.

Niles said they were busy, but it was worth it. "Real excited about what's going on with Gainesville School System for its facilities and what it allows us to offer our student body, all the way from preparing them for the work force, for college and career, for technical school, but then also allowing them to have the opportunity to advance in all kinds of sports activities, JROTC for military," he said. "We believe that we are offering our guys and gals, our student body, all of the opportunities they have to succeed and compete in a global world."
