A tradition that has been ongoing since 2009 will continue at the 131st commencement ceremony at Gainesville High School on Friday, May 16.
GHS Principal Roberto Rivera will confer two honorary diplomas with one going to passionate Red Elephant supporter Scott Rutherford and the other going to longtime educator Dr. Faith Simpson.
Dr. Simpson spent more than 20 years within the Gainesville City School System as an educator but also assisted in coaching cheerleading, girls’ basketball, softball and track and field at both the middle and high school levels.
She also served as an assistant principal and athletic director at Gainesville Middle School until her retirement.
Rutherford brought his daughters to the system in 2016 and even past their graduations he continues to volunteer by supporting Red Elephant athletics.
He helps with game day operations for every home football game, and serves as public address announcer and scoreboard operator for home soccer matches in the Spring.
Both Dr. Simpson and Rutherford were nominated and supported by the community.
