Gwinnett school board set to vote Friday on new superintendent hire

By Lauren Hunter Multimedia Journalist

Georgia's largest school district could have a new leader as early as this week.

The Gwinnett Board of Education is scheduled to vote Friday on formally hiring Calvin Watts as the new school superintendent, according to a report by the Gwinnett Daily Post. The board will hold a called meeting at 5 p.m. in the J. Alvin Wilbanks Instructional Center and vote on hiring Watts following executive session.

The board announced Watts as the sole finalist for the position earlier this month, but had to wait 14 days after the announcement to hold the vote in accordance with state law.

Watts is a former GCPS administrator who has served as the superintendent for Kent School District in Washington since 2015. His prior employment with GCPS includes assistant superintendent for school improvement and operations for seven years, as well as area director of human resources staffing from November 2005 to July 2007.

If hired, Watts will replace current GCPS Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks. Wilbanks will leave the position this week after 25 years in the district's top position.
