Gainesville School Board lowers millage rate, adopts tentative budget

The Gainesville City School Board has tentatively adopted a budget and rolled back millage rate for Fiscal Year 2022.

The millage rate was recommended to be rolled back to 6.395 mills. Last year's rate was 6.614 mills. This is a full rollback, meaning public hearings on the millage rate will not be needed.

"That means we're able to save about $21.90 for every $100,000 that the home is assessed," said Superintendent Jeremy Williams. "Last couple of years we had either kept the millage rate, or we did roll back a couple of years ago, we're just excited to bring the community a rollback that's kind of consistent with what you see from other government entities in our area."

As there were 250 less students in the system during the pandemic year, this upcoming year's revenues and expenditures changed. The tentative budget totals $74,345,975.

Of note in the revenue portion, QBE Earnings were lower than anticipated due to decreased enrollment and austerity cuts; property taxes indicate reassessed growth outpaced real growth; and CARES/ESSER Funds will offset substitutes, PPE, and operational costs.

Of note in the expenditures, 17 positions were absorbed due to decreased enrollment; FY22 Budget Playbook increased calculations for schools; Step Increases remain for years of experience and degree advancement; Classified Salary Scales adjusted at the entry level, including the nurse scale; and additional positions are allotted for the second middle school

More detailed information from the budget packet is available here. Graphs detailing the general budget changes and the millage rate changes are above.

Public hearings for the tentative budget will be on Monday June 14 at 6 p.m. and Monday June 21 at 5 p.m. The final adoption will follow at a board meeting at 5:30 p.m.
