Kemp announces end to federal unemployment subsidy

Governor Brian Kemp will end the subsidy on unemployment. Kemp made the announcement Thursday morning on Fox News.

"I don't know if the Biden administration understands that but later today (Thursday) we'll be putting out an announcement that we're not going to be participating in the federal subsidy any longer," Kemp said.

"That's going to be mid to late June we're working with the Labor Commissioner and we'll have some more details coming out, but we are going to end that participation."

Kemp said he was seeing a struggle for small business owners and the people who were working, and that more people were needed in the work force, and that less people in the workforce means a decrease in productivity and increase inflation.

On Tuesday, the AP reported Labor Commissioner spokeswoman Kersha Cartwright said Mark Butler and Gov. Brian Kemp met the day before to discuss the possibility of cutting the $300-a-week federal supplement to unemployed workers, or cutting off special federal benefits to people not usually eligible for state unemployment.

Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Montana and South Carolina have all already withdrawn from the $300-a-week federal assistance.

Kemp said to those that oppose him that there is no intention of taking away regular unemployment, just the federal subsidy. He encouraged others to get out and talk to citizens, and that he had heard the same complaints from citizens all over the state.

Georgia Senate President Pro Tempore Butch Miller of Gainesville released a statement following Kemp's appearance on Fox News.

“As our federal government approaches $29 trillion in debt, President Biden and the federal government have turned their back on our local business owners desperately facing labor shortages by continuing to hand out taxpayers dollars in the form of needless unemployment benefits. I applaud Gov. Kemp for standing up for Georgians and for Georgia businesses.”
