Here's an odd news story: I'm 30

Two very important things have happened: my Odd News segment is returning on our new afternoon show, Newsroom, and I turned 30.

I love kooky stuff. Sometimes I go to kooky or weird places just look at how kooky or weird it is, like carnivals. It’s a sort of comfort, in a way, so you can bet I’m excited to begin sharing unusual, wacky and funny news stories across North Georgia again.

And the best part is how many of those news stories are animals just being animals. There are all kinds of animal stories out there waiting to be shared with the world. My personal past favorite was a parrot that was called to a witness stand because it was mimicking and repeating the dialogue from an actual murder.

The new show comes in part with the passing of Rush Limbaugh, and the change in line up for radio stations all over the country. You can read more about what we’ve kicked off today here. But it also comes with the Spring season, a time for new beginnings, rebirth, whatever you want to call it.

That brings me to the big 3-oh! I mostly feel like I’ve finally woken up the age that I’ve felt since I was a pre-teen. I’ve always gotten along well with people older than me and I’ve definitely had some ideas that have made my peers raise their eyebrows. Not because they were stupid, but because the ideas were ahead of myself. I’ve noticed a handful of my silly ideas that were once teased or considered laughable have been picked up by the masses many moons later. I’ll keep any gloating to a minimum.

I guess I expected to feel different, and initially I didn’t think I did. But I do kind of feel like I’m wearing shoes that fit properly. I don’t feel as wobbly, I guess. I also feel more aware of how things – physically, emotionally, whatever - are different than when I was 22, or 19, or 12.

A frequent source of mine and I were chatting a few weeks back, and he had just turned 40. I hadn’t realized we were so close in age. But we had a very small real talk about how your 30’s are better than your 20’s, because your 20’s are hard and confusing and can be pretty rough. No one had said that to me yet, so, while in the middle of a vaccine clinic at 8 in the morning and with no hijinks in play, that resonated with me.

So, I’m looking forward to what 30+ has to offer. I mean, I’m kicked it off with dinner at Scott's Downtown and now get to continue my favorite segment, Odd News. What else can go right?
