Baseball playoffs: Three area teams advance to the second round

In a light night of Georgia High School Association playoff baseball around the area, Flowery Branch and North Hall rolled into the second round on Wednesday. 

As for Branch, the No. 3 seed out of Region 8-4A, Mason Compton tossed a perfect game in Game 1, including seven strikeouts as the fifth-ranked Falcons blew past Region 5-4A No. 2 seed Fayette County 10-0 on the road. JB Bell and Austin Borrie had two hits each, while Bell and Jake Beaver drove in three runs apiece. 

In Game 2, Beaver struck out 10 batters and smacked two hits to help the Falcons complete the sweep of Fayette County, 10-5. The Falcons get the winner of Mays-Cedartown next week. 

Over at Lynn Cottrell Field, the top-ranked Trojans scattered seven runs across six innings to shutout Coahulla Creek 7-0. Jay Johnson, Jaret Bales and Baker Dyer led the offense with two hits apiece. In Game 2, Eli Reece fanned nine Coahulla Creek batters to get the 5-0 shut-out win to complete the sweep. The Trojans outhit Coahulla Creek 9-4, with Hudson Barrett driving in two runs. Luke Erickson led the hitting attack with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. 

North Hall gets the winner of Hart County-Redan next week. 

Over in Jefferson, the sixth-ranked Dragons rolled past Mt. Zion-Jonesboro, 10-4, 13-3, to advance to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs. Jefferson will play the winner of Marist-Central Carrollton next week. 

Chestatee, a No. 4 seed out of Region 8-4A, played No. 1 seed Hampton close in Game 1 but lost 5-3. Game 2, however, was a blowout loss for the War Eagles, 9-2.
