Flowery Branch announces plan for special election, approves new city manager

FLOWERY BRANCH – First reading of an ordinance calling for a special election was approved by the Flowery Branch City Council Thursday evening.  A final reading and vote on the ordinance will take place December 16.

This because the Post 2 seat held by mayor-elect Ed Asbridge needs to be filled.  Asbridge stepped away from active duty on the city council when he decided to run for mayor in August.  Asbridge was elected to the mayor’s spot in November and now the city can seek a replacement to fill his vacated seat.

Two years remain on Asbridge’s vacated seat and that term will run through December 31, 2023.

If the ordinance as written is approved the special election will be held Tuesday, March 15, 2022, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.  The lone place to vote that day will be Flowery Branch City Hall on Pine Street.

A qualifying period for those interested in running for the post will begin Monday, February 14, 2022, and extend for two days during normal City Hall hours, ending at 5:00 p.m. on February 16, 2022.  Qualifying may be accomplished in the office of the City Clerk, Shelia Cooper, who serves as the city’s Election Superintendent.

There is a $144.00 fee to qualify for the election.  Contact city hall for additional information.

MORE CHANGES FOR FLOWERY BRANCH ADMINISTRATION

The recently announced sole candidate for the job of City Manager, Tonya Parrish, was approved for the position unanimously by the Flowery Branch City Council Thursday evening.

Parrish is finishing her final days as City Manager in Waycross, Georgia, and will begin work in Flowery Branch on December 20, 2021.

In other moves under the city hall roof on Pine Street, former Interim City Clerk, Shelia Cooper, who left the administrative team in Flowery Branch to take the job of City Clerk in Johns Creek a month ago, has decided to return to Flowery Branch and accept the job of City Clerk following news that City Clerk and Interim City Manager Vicki Strong will be leaving to become County Clerk for Barrow County.

Strong had stepped away from her role as City Clerk in May to serve as Interim City Manager following the unexpected resignation of longtime City Manager Bill Andrew on May 12, 2021.
