Football: Key region games highlight Week 12 radio lineup

By Bo Wilson Sports Editor

Upsets, big wins and heartbreaking losses highlighted Week 11 of the high school football season.

Cherokee Bluff rallied from a 14-point deficit to beat North Hall and capture the Region 7-3A championship. North Oconee pulled off the biggest upset of the year over top-ranked Jefferson to win the Region 8-4A title. Commerce kept its Region 8-A title hopes alive with an upset over No.7 Washington-Wilkes.

Week 12 has several contests on the slate that have huge playoff implications. Look for the playoff scenario story later today.

After Friday, some regions across the area could be looking to the tiebreaker to decide playoff seeding, and some will be clear cut.

Three games highlight the Jacobs Media airways, and all three should provide fans with plenty of excitement.

Buford at Dacula...  Buford won this one pretty easily in 2020, but Dacula is much improved since last season. However, Buford's defense is among the best in the state and is the best in Class 6A, averaging just 6.2 points per game. They've not allowed an offensive touchdown in the last five games. On offense, the Wolves have averaged 46 points against Region 8-6A opponents -- 36.1 for the season. Dacula has averaged 38.8 ppg in region play -- 29 points for the season, and the defense is giving up 18.78 ppg. This one is an old rivalry that was renewed last year. Could the rivalry-factor play into the outcome? You can hear that game on WDUN AM 550. (Click to listen live)

North Hall at Dawson County...  Since 2018, this game has decided the No. 2 seed in Region 7-3A. North Hall has won the last two in high-scoring affairs, 40-37 and 34-21. Prior to 2019, the Tigers had won three in a row, including the 2018 battle at The Brickyard, 17-10. This year is no different. The winner gets a home playoff game in the first round. The loser has a tough road game somewhere in DeKalb County. Both teams have been clicking in region play. Dawson County has averaged 38 ppg on offense while giving up 15.6. North Hall has averaged 39.8 ppg, offensively, and giving up 15 points on defense. On paper, this game should be like the rest of them -- pretty darn good. You can listen to the game on WDUN FM 102.9. (Click to listen live)

And Gainesville travels to North Forsyth... Thanks to the West Forsyth win over Lambert last week, Gainesville will miss the playoffs for the first time since 1999. The Red Elephants did their part last week with the win over Denmark, but the West Forsyth win eliminated Gainesville. Regardless, this game is always a good one and should be this year. Big Red got their first win ever on the Raiders last season at City Park, 17-0. Prior to that, the Raiders had one six in a row dating back to 1998.  The game can be heard live on FM 94.5 The Lake. (Click to listen live)
