Habersham County house fire claims cat, other pets not located

The cause of a fire that destroyed a home near Demorest Monday afternoon remains under investigation.

“The fire appears to have started on the front area of the house near a restroom, but the investigation is ongoing and [we’re working with the State Fire Marshal’s Office in determining the cause,” said Habersham County Emergency Services Director Chad Black.

The home, at 141 Timberwood Trail Southwest, was a total loss, Black said.

Black said the owner/occupant of the home was John Cantwell.

Firefighters located one deceased cat but were unable to locate another cat and a second dog.
“One dog the daughter was able to grab when she escaped the fire.

No injuries were reported.
