Hall County Schools to start on time, architect selected for renovations

"The pandemic isn't stopping us, as a matter of fact, I don't know if we've ever been busier," Hall County Schools Superintendent Will Schofield said following Monday night's board work session.

"And I don't know that our students have ever been more in need of the services that their local public schools provide."

Local schools have been taking charge of everything from technology to meals for students since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S. hard, with Hall County being one of them. And while we all need to make a few changes when things around us change, kids will still generally need a healthy meal, a way to pick up skills, and some place to socialize.

Students haven't seen a typical school day since March, which is why the school board agreed Monday night to alter the upcoming year's calendar and require less digital learning days for their high school students.

Schofield said the digital learning days are typically on the calendar to help prepare for postsecondary. "We think they've gotten all that that they need, so we changed those to regular days in the calendar."

And, Schofield said the August 24 school start date was currently safe. "Again, we're not going to make decisions any earlier than we have to and we're monitoring those conditions daily."

The rest of the meeting took a look at progress. The board voted to approve the ESPLOST and bond referendum requests for some of the renovation projects on the docket at East Hall High School, Johnson High School and the middle school gymnasiums. East Hall will include major renovations schoolwide, Johnson High will focus on a performing arts center, and the middle schools will get updated air conditioning systems.

The school system struggled through some technical difficulties Monday, unable to stream the meeting on YouTube or Facebook Live, however it was recorded, and can be watched here.
