Corps-managed parks damaged in Monday storm closed for clean-up

By AccessWDUN Staff

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has closed, or partially closed, some parks around Lake Lanier to clean up damage from a storm that hit the lake on Monday afternoon.

According to a social media post by Corps officials, several parks were damaged by the microburst that hit the Flowery Branch area and then moved into the Two Mile Creek area in Forsyth County. The National Weather Service issued a report Wednesday afternoon, saying the storm kicked up winds of 60-70 mph. The high winds, which lasted about 10 minutes, brought down trees in the parks and damaged boats and docks at Aqualand Marina and Holiday Marina in Hall County.

The Corps said the following parks sustained damage and are closed or partially closed while clean-up is underway:

  • Van Pugh Park - boat ramp and picnic sites are closed
  • Burton Mill Park - picnic and beach area closed; boat ramp open
  • Two Mile Park - portions of park closed
  • Vann's Tavern Park - boat ramp is open, but restroom is closed

Old Federal Park also was impacted by fallen trees, but the campground had been closed previously because of shoreline damage at the park.

There is no timeline for repairs to be finished.
