Gainesville planning board to consider rezoning, annexation for new city middle school

By AccessWDUN Staff

Back in February, Gainesville City School System Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Williams unveiled the potential site for a second middle school for the district. Next week, the Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board will decide on rezoning and annexation requests for the parcels of property.

The 22.6-acre property is made up of four parcels located east of Gould Drive and south of McEver Road directly across McEver from the old Free Chapel church campus. Gainesville planning staff said the school system wants to bring all four parcels under one jurisdiction with a zoning of Office and Institutional (O-I). That will require the annexation of 5.934 acres and the rezoning of 16.67 acres.

The proposed middle school development includes a two-story building, 183,400 square feet in size, along with a multi-purpose field with a field house and bleachers. The main access for the school would be from McEver Road, according to information released by the Gainesville Planning Division.

City planning division staff has recommended approval of the requests with some conditions, including the completion of a traffic study for the area.

The Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board will meet on Tuesday, July 14, at 5:30 p.m. to consider the requests.
