North Georgia Community Foundation doubles amount for local non-profits in third round of grants

The North Georgia Community Foundation is set to announce the recipients for their third round of COVID-19 relief grants, and since the first round was announced a month ago, the amount of grant money has doubled.

The foundation named a dozen local non-profits as recipients for the first round of $159,000 worth of grants in early April. Since then NGCF has added 14 additional non-profits and the total grant money raised amounts to almost $340,000.

The foundation also announced with its first round of non-profits that its entire 2020 grant funding would go to their COVID-19 Relief Fund.

Michelle Prater, president and CEO of NGCF, said NGCF is still targeting non-profits that meet emergency needs.

“This crisis has impacted so many people,” said Prater. “What we’re focused on is basic needs, folks who are providing food, shelter and financial assistance.”

Prater said one way the foundation has raised money for this fund is through collaboration with the local non-profits. Prater used United Way of Hall County and United Way of Forsyth County as examples of non-profits that have received matching grants from NGCF because of their efforts to help the community.

“I think that it’s always important to see community groups like United Way and NGCF working so closely together,” said Prater.

Prater confirmed that there are many rounds, and funds, still in the works.

“The North Georgia Community Foundation is committed to be there through this entire process,” said Prater. “We’re not going anywhere and we’re going to be here to help as much as we can.”

Prater said members of the community can also donate to the fund on the NGCF website. She said all donations go directly to COVID-19 Relief Fund and the non-profits.
