Collins announced donation of potential COVID-19 medicine for Georgia

Ninth District Representative Doug Collins announced Tuesday that 200,000 doses of hydroxychloroquine sulfate has been donated to the state Department of Public Health to potential treat hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Collins, who is from Gainesville, said Amneal Pharmaceuticals, Inc. made the donation.

“This medication could be pivotal in Georgia’s fight against COVID—19 and could potentially save thousands of lives across our state, said Collins. "Acts of generosity like this remind us of the remarkable ways in which our country has rallied together to support one another in the face of this crisis, and I’m humbled to have worked with Amneal and Georgia’s Department of Public Health to help secure this donation on behalf of our state. We will beat this virus, and our nation will emerge stronger than ever before.”

The medicine is currently used to treat other illnesses, including malaria, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and other autoimmune diseases. It has also may be able to treat COVID-19.

“All of us at Amneal Pharmaceuticals are committed to assisting our communities in the global fight against COVID-19,” said Chirag Patel, Co-CEO of Amneal Pharmaceuticals.

Collins said in a press release Tuesday that Georgia is one of the first states to have received a donation of the hydroxychlroquine sulfate from Amneal Pharmaceuticals. The company is also donating and providing products directly to hospitals across the nation.
