Gainesville City Council to meet to discuss stricter COVID-19 restrictions

The Gainesville City Council will meet in a special session today to discuss further restrictions for the city amid the coronavirus outbreak, Mayor Danny Dunagan said Monday morning.

But Dunagan suggested he wouldn’t support a total shutdown of the city, as some Georgia cities and counties have done.

“Right now, we’re looking at some shutdown possibilities, but not a total shutdown,” Dunagan said. “People still have to operate. People still have to move around. We’re asking people to follow the CDC guidelines … and practice good common sense.”

Dunagan made his comments during an appearance on WDUN’s “Morning Talk with Martha Zoller.”  Hall County Commission Chairman Richard Higgins also appeared on the program.

The council meeting is set for 3 p.m. in the Municipal Courtroom at the Public Safety Building.

Both the city and council governments have shut down public buildings and are asking residents to conduct business with government online, by email or by phone. Dunagan and Higgins said they encourage people to follow CDC guidelines to keep a “social distance” of a least six feet from others, wash hands frequently with warm water and soap and stay home if sick.

“We’ve asked people to adhere to the CDC and federal guidelines,” Dunagan said. “We have a lot of people who are, and we thank them. But we have a lot who are not.”

Both men said they support Gov. Brian Kemp’s decision to leave strict closure requirements to local governments.

“Local control is goo because you have a sense of the public in your city or your county,” Higgins said. “We’re trying to look at everything. … You’ve got to do the right thing for the right reason.”
