Alpine Helen sets Lighting of the Village in new location

HELEN – Alpine Helen is gearing up for its annual Lighting of the Village celebration from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27.

This year’s event will move to a new venue.

“This year it’s a little bit of a change due to the pandemic and us making sure everyone can social distance, so we’ve moved it from the downtown Marketplatz, where everyone usually would gather for the lighting and we would have close to 5,000 people,” said Jerry Brown, executive director of the Alpine Helen White County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

This year’s event will be held at Helen Riverside Park on Edelweiss Strasse along the Chattahoochee River, which will give those attending extra room to spread out and enjoy the event.

“This will allow folks to social distance,” Brown said. “We’ll have Santa there. The event is from 5 to 7, and the lighting is at 6 p.m. We really hope that all the local folks from the surrounding region will come and join us for this fun event.”

Helen will hold its annual Christmas parade at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, in the downtown area. The parade will line up off Edelweiss Strasse and proceed to Chattahoochee Street then onto Main Street to Betty’s Country Store on the north end of town.

Edelweiss Strasse begins at Ga. 75 on the south end of town and proceeds past the water park, Helen Riverside Park and the Festhalle, as well as many businesses, on its way to Chattahoochee Street.
