North Georgia communities plan ceremonies, programs for Veterans Day 2020

Communities around North Georgia are planning to pay tribute to local servicemen and servicewomen on Wednesday for Veterans Day 2020, though some events may be scaled back due to COVID-19.

Events will be held on Wednesday at various locations across North Georgia including Veterans Park in Lula, Freedom Park in Cleveland, the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega and the Habersham Wall of Honor. READ MORE

3 Gainesville Police officers move up the ranks

Effective last Monday, three officers with the Gainesville Police Department took on new roles after receiving promotions.

Sergeant Erin Escalante was promoted from Detective and will supervise the Community Relations Unit, Lieutenant Kevin Holbrook was promoted from Corporal and is now the commander of the Specialized Services Division and Josh Adams was promoted to Captain and will now oversee the Operations Bureau.

The three officers were pinned by their families at a ceremony on November 2. READ MORE

North Georgia Tech announces new Electrical Line program offering

North Georgia Technical College recently announced the addition of an Electrical Line program on the Blairsville campus.

The program is already offered on the Clarkesville campus, but prospective students are typically put on a waitlist for nine to twelve months. School officials believe that offering the program on a second campus will allow more students to complete the program.

The Electrical Line program can be completed in less than eight weeks and will be offered during the upcoming spring semester, which begins Thursday, Jan. 7. READ MORE

Lumpkin County to get new aquatic center in 2022

Lumpkin County is expected to get a new aquatic center by late spring or early summer of 2022.

The Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners is partnering with Mike and Lynn Cottrell, the Lumpkin County Board of Education and the University of North Georgia to build the Cottrell Aquatic Center. The facility will share the property with the new Lumpkin County Elementary School and will have indoor and outdoor swimming with a zero-entry pool, a lazy river and splash activities. READ MORE

New mural brightens up Gainesville's Midtown Greenway

A new spray paint mural created by local artist Chad Shore is adding to Gainesville’s local art offerings.

The “Love Freedom” mural is located on the backside of McGarity’s Business Projects on Grove Street in the Midtown Greenway area. The project took two months to complete and is part of a recent partnership with the City of Gainesville, Gainesville Parks and Recreation and the Vision 2030 Public Art Committee. READ MORE
