Here are some of the top stories you may have missed this weekend.

Early voting a wrap, more than 3.8 million Georgians cast ballots

The early voting period for the 2020 General Election has come to an end in Georgia following a record turnout. The Secretary of State's Office released a final tally at 10 p.m. Friday, saying that more than 3.87 million voters had cast in-person and absentee ballots in the three-week early voting period. According to the Secretary of State’s Office, Georgia has a total of just over seven million registered voters.

Voters who did not cast ballots during the early voting period will be able to vote on Tuesday, Nov. 3 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Absentee ballots must be in hand at elections offices by 7 p.m. READ MORE

Haley makes case for Loeffler during Oakwood campaign stop and Collins tour makes stop in downtown Demorest

Senator Kelly Loeffler and Representative Doug Collins each made stops in North Georgia on Friday to continue their campaigns for the highly contested U.S. Senate special election.

Loeffler made an appearance at Curt’s Cafeteria in Oakwood where she was endorsed by Nikki Haley, former South Carolina governor and ambassador to the United Nations. Haley said that the upcoming election is critical for Georgia and backed Loeffler’s stance on issues including abortion, gun ownership and term limits. Following the Oakwood stop, Loeffler and Haley made appearances in Monroe and McDonough. READ MORE

Collins made stops in Toccoa and Demorest on Friday morning and continued on to Cleveland, Dahlonega and Dawsonville. He was accompanied by Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black and State Rep. Terry Rogers in Demorest. Former Gov. and First Lady Nathan and Sandra Deal were also in attendance. Collins focused on getting the economy back on track after COVID-19 and supporting first responders. READ MORE  

Spring Street parking spaces temporarily eliminated due to Gainesville streetscape improvements

All parallel and angled parking along Spring Street between Bradford Street and Green Street is temporarily unavailable due to work on phase two of the City of Gainesville’s downtown streetscape improvements project.

The parking spaces were closed on Monday, Oct. 26 as crews shifted the Spring Street travel lane to allow for sanitary sewer work. According to Gainesville Public Works Deputy Director Matt Tarver, the closure could last 3-4 weeks depending on the weather. READ MORE

Hall County Sheriff's Office launches holiday season traffic safety campaign

With traffic fatalities in Hall County this year already ahead of 2019 numbers, the Hall County Sheriff's Office has launched a campaign to remind motorists of safe driving practices.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office is specifically seeking to crack down on distracted driving, speeding and impaired driving. The department will place a special emphasis on one of these areas each month for the rest of the year. In addition, deputies will continue their regular traffic enforcement efforts while increasing activity in high-traffic areas. READ MORE
