First-time claims for unemployment insurance in Gainesville were down compared to last month and a year ago.
Applications were down 24.5 percent and 27.3 percent, respectively, according to state Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. Fewer claims were also filed statewide, 31.5 percent and 9.9 percent.
Compared to a month ago claims decreased in 12 of the 14 metropolitan areas, with only Athens and Warner Robins showing increases; over the past year, they were down in ten of the metropolitan areas, with increases recorded in Athens, Dalton, Macon, and Warner Robins.
