Fire destroys Batesville chicken house

CLARKESVILLE — Habersham firefighters, joined by those from White and Rabun counties and other departments, battled a fire at a chicken house in Batesville Thursday afternoon.

The fire on Kelly Mountain Road at Henry Pittman Road In Batesville was reported shortly before 3:30 p.m.

Two Habersham County tankers, along with one each from Rabun and White counties, assisted in shuttling water from a hydrant 10 miles from the scene, said Habersham County Assistant Fire Chief Jason Davey at the scene. Lee Arrendale State Prison Fire Department and the Georgia Forestry Commission also assisted.

Public water is not available in the Batesville area, so the closest water source was a hydrant at Habersham County Station 16 on Ga. 17 near the White County line, Davey said.

The chicken house had collapsed by the time firefighters arrived, and was destroyed by the fire. No injuries were reported and there were no chickens in the house at the time of the fire.

Firefighters remained on scene until 7 p.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
