The Cumming City Center will be uniquely owned and operated by city leaders

Cumming city leaders plan big things for the new city center and will uniquely manage the project as a revenue maker.

Mayor Troy Brumbalow spoke to the crowd at the development's ground breaking recently and said the new city center idea came from growing up in Forsyth County.

He reminisced about shopping at Parsons and Super D, sweltering in the heat of the Fourth of July parade downtown, and said, "...all those simple beautiful bonds of small town life, the families laughing together, friends goofing off after school, and neighbors helping neighbors, those are exactly the things I dreamed of when I dreamed of the city center."

Chairman of the Downtown Development Authority, David Leathers, said the project will add revenue directly to the town's budget and the community impact will be immeasurable as the development offers a safe place for neighbors to gather and enjoy concerts, a farmer's market, and shopping.

"I think it was Suwanee, maybe, that developed a similar project but ultimately sold it out to private investors," Leathers said. "And now the private investors have the benefit of the project. Well, that's not going to happen here."

Mayor Troy Brumbalow said the city does not plan to lease space to any franchise businesses in an effort to maintain a small-town feel.

The project will include 50s-style architecture, a stream and small pond, an amphitheater, and a prohibition-style speak-easy.

City leaders said the project should be complete in about two years.
