Man convicted in Gainesville among those on federal death row

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

As the federal government prepares to resume executions in December, a man convicted in Gainesville 15 years ago is among 60 prisoners sitting on federal death row.

Attorney General William Barr announced plans last week for the resumption of executions at the federal level for the first time since 2003.  Barr said plans call for five prisoners, all convicted of killing children, to be put to death beginning in December.

Among the other 55 prisoners on the federal government's death row is William LeCroy, Jr., a Gilmer County man who was found guilty by a federal jury in Gainesville in March 2004.  LeCroy was convicted of killing Cherry Log woman, who surprised him in the act of burglarizing her home when she returned from a shopping trip.  Joann Tiesler was raped before she was stabbed to death.  LeCroy, who stole Tiesler's car and was later arrested in Minnesota, was tried under the federal carjacking statute instead of on state charges.

The trial was held in U.S. District Court in Gainesville.
