The Gainesville City School Board agreed to push forward with the Gainesville High School Advanced Studies Center after a vote at a meeting Monday night.
Chief Operations Officer Adrian Niles asked the board chair and the superintendent to sign off on the application for the site evaluation.
“That will carry this application to the Department of Education, for site approval of the Rainey Street property,” said Niles.
The facility will be located near the entrance to the Gainesville High School property.
He said the Advanced Studies Center would focus on programs like college prep, workplace development, technology development and other programs that can help students become more readily available for the work force.
“It’ll take about a year and half to construct and we’re hoping to get started next year,” Niles said, adding that they are in preliminary design stages.
