DNR releases identity of Grayson father who perished in Lake Hartwell boat crash

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources says Brandon Dean Wilson, 39, of Grayson died in a two-vessel collision on Lake Hartwell in Stephens County Saturday night.

“Georgia DNR game wardens responded to a boating incident that occurred on Lake Hartwell in the area of Eastanollee Creek just after 10 p.m. on Saturday,” said Mark McKinnon of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division.

“It appears that a small johnboat being operated by an adult male with his 6-year-old son on board was struck by a ski boat,” McKinnon said. “The child had on a lifejacket and was uninjured in the incident. He was pulled from the water by a passenger in the ski boat.”

McKinnon confirmed Wilson, operator of the johnboat, was later located in the water deceased and was turned over to the Stephens County Coroner’s Office.

Stephens County Sheriff’s Office, Stephens County Emergency Medical Services and Stephens County Rescue responded.

Georgia DNR CIRT is investigating, according to McKinnon.

“The investigation will likely take six to eight weeks to complete,” McKinnon said.
