The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is searching Lake Lanier for a man who disappeared near the Vann's Tavern day use area Friday night.
Mark McKinnon with the DNR identified the man Saturday evening as 28-year-old Lamar Brown of Atlanta. He said game warden were first called to the scene around 6:15 p.m. Friday.
"Two individuals were rescued by game wardens but one male is unaccounted for," McKinnon said in an email statement.
He said the search continued until 1 a.m. Saturday before authorities stopped the search for the night. Crews were back on the water at 8 a.m and officials said they used SONAR to serach the water until boat traffic became heavy.
McKinnon said the search has been difficult due to boat traffic, the jagged surface of the bottom of the lake and depths ranging from 8 to 50 feet. Georgia DNR Sergeant Lee Brown said if Lamar Brown is not located by 11:00 p.m. Saturday, officials will suspend the search until Sunday morning. He said SONAR will once again be used as long as possible.
DNR officials were assisted by Hall County divers during Saturday morning's search.
Meanwhile, according to a posting on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Facebook page, Vann's Tavern and the "immediate area of water around marker 12TM" are closed as the search for Brown continues.
