Northeast Georgia area teams in both soccer and baseball had a big night Wednesday in the quarterfinal round.
Not a single team was eliminated on a night that saw a sweep of the boys soccer action and one baseball team -- North Hall -- take an impressive sweep on the road.
The Gainesville, Johnson, Jefferson, and Union County boys soccer teams all notched home wins to advance to the semifinal round.
Gainesville built an early lead and then held on for a 4-3 victory over Richmond Hill in Class 6A while the defending Class 5A state champion Johnson boys rallied past Fayette County with a pair of second-half goals for a 2-1 win. In Class 3A, the Jefferson boys advanced to their first-ever semifinal with a heartstopping 1-0 win over Tattnall County. In Class 2A, Union County advanced to the Final Four with a 4-0 whitewash of Jeff Davis.
In baseball action, the Trojans advanced to their second semifinals in three seasons and their third since 2013 after pummeling Appling County 11-2 and 10-0 in six innings on the road in Class 3A. Buford, meanwhile, rallied for a Game 2 win, 3-1, over Ola after dropping the first game 5-2. Game 3 is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday in McDonough.
And in Class A Public, Commerce remained alive against Schley County winning Game 2 11-0 after losing the opener 8-1. Game 3 is set for 3 p.m. Thursday at Schley County.
