Baseball: Area teams continue key region series'

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

Several northeast Georgia area teams continued to make a statement while others opened the region schedules with big wins Monday and Tuesday.

Many will look to keep things rolling on Wednesday while others are looking to get back into the race for the playoffs.

Region 8-6A Habersham Central opened with a big win over Apalachee while Gainesville's quest to put a rough non-region schedule behind it got off to a disappointing start in a big loss to Lanier. Both teams continue those three-game series on Wednesday.

In Region 7-3A, North Hall and Fannin County kept pace atop the region with the Rebels beating Dawson County on Tuesday and the Trojans roughing up Cherokee Bluff on Monday. North Hall and Cherokee Bluff will continue their series in Flowery Branch on Wednesday and Friday while the Rebels will take on the Tigers in a doubleheader on Friday in Blue Ridge.

In Region 8-3A, No. 1 Jefferson and cross-town rival Jackson County will continue their series with a doubleherader on Friday. Morgan County and Franklin County will continue their series with a doubleherader on Friday.

In Region 7-4A, several key series continue on Wednesday. Flowery Branch and West Hall and Chestatee and White County all try to keep pace with No. 1 Blessed Trinity atop the standings.

Region 8-5A Johnson and Clarke Central resume their series. No. 1 Buford Buford is taking the week off from region play.

In Region 8-2A, Banks County is off to a hot start with a perfect 6-0 record and is tied with No. 2-ranked Elbert County (6-0 in region play) atop the region standings. The Leopards head to Rabun County (3-3 in region play) for a doubleheader on Friday. Elbert County travels to Union County (2-4 in region play) on Friday.

And in Region 8-A, Lakeview Academy, Commerce, Towns County, and Riverside Military all try to keep pace in a series of key matchups.
